The Nordic Folkboat Gold Cup is the unofficial World Championship for the popular boat class. The folkboat, especially loved in the Nordics, is known for its seaworthy character, safety, reasonable speed, good behavior, and elegance. In 2023, the Estonian Kalev Yacht Club and the Estonian Folkboat Flotilla will host the event and expect 70 folkboats from Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, the UK, and the US to race in Tallinn Bay.
The main competition will be preceded by the Estonian Championships where everyone is welcome to test the conditions before the official Gold Cup begins.
Kalev Yacht Club, Established in 1948, is a leading club in Estonia and was the center of the 1980 Olympic Games. Located at the mouth of the Pirita River and protected from winds and waves, the club’s harbor serves as the official sailors’ village. Program activities will take place across various venues in Tallinn to get to know the city and the culture of this sea nation.
Estonia is one of nine countries by the Baltic Sea, easily accessible and unique among its neighbors. Its winding coastline is much longer than its land border, with roughly 2000 islands. Tallinn, the capital, has a rich maritime history that has evolved from a medieval trade center and a Tsarist stronghold to the many vibrant harbors that attract visitors today.
In addition to Pirita, the home of the 2023 Nordic Folkboat Gold Cup, you can explore the best-preserved medieval Old Town in Northern Europe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, visit Seaplane Harbour, one of Europe’s most exciting maritime museums, tour Noblessner Marina with its highly recognized urban design, and discover much more.
For the 3rd year in a row, we will carry out the Startup Regatta that connects the sport of sailing and the entrepreneurial community. On one hand it will be a friendly competition and a crash course into sailing but it will also be a unique opportunity for the sailors to meet and greet with the Estonian start-up and investor community. The competition is followed by an evening program and of course, awarding the best sailors.
